A career path is a sequence of vital stages in life that leads you to fulfill your short- and long-term career goals. Career paths traditionally imply exponential growth or advancement, and to start, it all begins with quality education as it is an influential first step for every graduate in staying competitive in the field. According to a report by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate drops at each higher level of education. For example, high school graduates have an unemployment rate of 8.3 percent, while college graduates are at 4.5 percent. This is evident in the case of Shameer, a 20-year-old student from MARA whose inspiring journey was previously featured on ProspectsASEAN here.
This leads to the importance of progress towards achieving professional qualification as his first step, as Shameer has completed his ICAEW CFAB at Kolej Professional MARA Beranang with flying colors in 2019. In this latest article, we will be expanding on Shameer’s career journey that has now progressed to Sunway TES to begin his journey towards acquiring his professional qualification with an aspiration to work in one of the Big 4 firms as an ICAEW ACA.
Muhammad Shameer shares his hardship as part of the first batch of CFAB at KPM Beranang and how that has led him to top employers such as KPMG, EY, and PwC
Bringing back this Pahang-born 20-year-old student, Muhammad Shameer bin Shaiful shares his challenges while pursuing the ICAEW-CFAB. Shameer believes that while it provides the finest and fastest path to achieving the Chartered Accountant title, it also brought him many difficulties as he was the first batch to take CFAB at KPM Beranang. With most of the lecturers being unfamiliar with the CFAB examinations, it posed as a small bump in his studies. Regardless, that did not hinder the lecturers from committing and giving their absolute best to ensure the students understood the subjects well. However, when the COVID-19 pandemic struck, it had a massive effect on the student physically and mentally as they had to adapt to the new norm of online classes. Nonetheless, managing his time well has helped Shameer prepare for the three months Work-Based Learning (WBL), which provides an environment where students can apply their working experience when answering professional papers.
With a dream to embark on the early stages of his career in auditing, Shameer believes that it will allow him to create a strong network of business connections with professionals as auditors are keen to meet new people regularly. Through ICAEW, it will help shape him to become a professional and knowledgeable chartered accountant and one with integrity as ICAEW offers a wide range of subjects, including business finance and business taxation, that will enhance his employability amongst top employers. Shameer has always been a huge advocate of ethics, even from the previous article where he shares that ICAEW modules include professional ethics, which makes it unique compared to others at building himself to become not only a skilled chartered accountant but also one with integrity. Through this programme, it has introduced him to big firms such as KPMG, EY, and PwC which helped illustrated the different sectors and the scope of work newly employed accountants will have to face but with the correct guide and training provided.
According to his parents, Shameer’s initial journey was worrying for them as they are aware of how the professional programme is known for its difficult passing rate. However, with the help of MARA YTP, it has given their middle-class family an opportunity to enroll their son in a private college. In the hope that Shameer will finish his YTP ICAEW on time, his parents share that “to be able to survive in this ever-changing world, one must always have his own Unique Selling Proposition (USP) for that you will stand out.”
