A Year at a Glance: Celebrating ICAEW South-East Asia’s Significant Milestones in 2021

ICAEW South-East Asia’s Milestones 2021

Founded in the UK in 1880, ICAEW is a world-leading organisation of Chartered Accountants headquartered in London with offices across the world in major cities like Beijing, Brussels, Dubai, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh, Hong Kong, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Shanghai, and Singapore. Their South East Asia regional office, established in Singapore in 2009, serves a pivotal role to support qualified chartered accountants across the region with a major presence in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Vietnam.

Over the years, ICAEW has introduced many exciting initiatives for current and prospective students who are looking to explore a career within the business, finance, and accounting professions. Through the prestigious ICAEW Chartered Accountant (ICAEW ACA) programme, ICAEW works closely with organisations to provide talent development and training to nurture future leaders in the profession.

Here are some key milestones ICAEW South-East Asia has achieved in the year of 2021:

ICAEW Singapore

1. ICAEW successfully hosted 20 teams in the inaugural ICAEW Business Challenge for non-accountancy students

In 2021, ICAEW’s Singapore office held the inaugural business challenge, which was open to all Year 1 non-Accountancy students from the various Polytechnic Institutions in Singapore, where a total of 20 teams participated in the event.

Through this event, ICAEW sought to introduce accounting to aspiring students interested in pursuing business studies but are unsure which course to choose. The ICAEW Business Challenge served as a platform to help these students better understand the ICAEW ACA programme in order to make informed choices during their course selection and ranking exercise. The event also successfully demonstrated that accounting is more than just numbers and data, as it ultimately enables students to develop strong business fundamentals.

Throughout the ICAEW Business Challenge’s series of questions and crossword puzzles specially designed by designated lecturers, students were offered a sneak peek into some of the ACA modules like financial and managerial accounting. Additionally, ICAEW younger members and student ambassadors were also present and had a dialogue with the participants on why they chose to study accountancy, their study journeys, and career successes.

ICAEW Vietnam

2. Memorandum of Understanding Signing with the Accounting & Auditing Supervisory Department from the Vietnam Ministry of Finance

ICAEW South-East Asia’s Milestones 2021ICAEW officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Accounting and Auditing Supervisory Department – Vietnam Ministry of Finance to jointly build a long-term and tight partnership to implement the common goals, which is to increase the quality of human resources and accelerate the development of Vietnam’s accounting and auditing aspects in accordance with the demand for international economic integration.

One of the most important goals is that both parties will consider the possibility of mapping out a training program for the certification of IFRS in Vietnam. Additionally, the two parties will organise periodical seminars and conferences to exchange accounting and auditing knowledge, jointly implement research projects, share experiences, technical resources, and best practices in accounting and auditing fields. This exciting development will pave the way for more cooperation between both organisations and open more learning and development opportunities for accounting professionals in Vietnam.

3. Memorandum of Understanding Signing with University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City (UEH)

ICAEW South-East Asia’s Milestones 2021As part of nurturing and training future business professionals, ICAEW has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with two of the top Universities in Vietnam, the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City (UEH) and National Economics University (NEU).

UEH will be enrolling eligible students in a full-time training programme, which integrates four modules of ICAEW CFAB and two Professional level modules. Every year, about 5,000 students enroll at the School of Accounting in UEH and a large number of annual internships in established accountancy and advisory firms are awarded to students from UEH. Along with the MoOU, the “KPMG – ICAEW S.T.A.R” scholarship programme was launched in partnership with UEH in December 2021. Students who passed at least 3 CFAB modules will have the opportunity to join the KPMG Internship in the 2022 cohort.

ICAEW Malaysia

4. ICAEW Malaysia’s New Members’ Celebration

ICAEW South-East Asia’s Milestones 2021On 19th November 2021, 150 new Malaysian chartered accountants were welcomed into the membership at ICAEW Malaysia’s New Members’ Celebration – a virtual event to celebrate the completion of exams and training, and the start of the new members’ careers as chartered accountants. Everyone, including senior members of the ICAEW Members’ Society Malaysian Chapter, toasted “virtually” to the new members on their success; recognising their efforts taken to pass exams, gain work skills and experience, and their journey towards becoming a chartered accountant.

The new members also got to network virtually with William Brooks, ICAEW President, council members as well as other veteran members, who were more than happy to share the value of membership and networking with the new members. This further deepened the bond of the member community and provided new members with the opportunity to tap on senior members’ experiences and receive career advice.

5. COP26 Collaboration with the British High Commission Kuala Lumpur (BHCKL) and British-Malaysia Chamber of Commerce (BMCC)

Leading up to COP26, ICAEW collaborated with the British High Commission Kuala Lumpur (BHCKL) and the British-Malaysia Chamber of Commerce (BMCC) with a series of events in October 2021.

Loh Wei Yuen, Head of ICAEW Malaysia, was featured in the BMCC Leadership in Action: Inspiring Solutions series. Wei Yuen shared how ICAEW and the accountancy profession have been playing an important role towards building sustainable economies while ensuring our planet’s resources are managed sustainably. Senior ICAEW members were also featured in a series of articles related to sustainability in the Malaysian media, including a commentary on Malaysia’s 2022 Budget allocation towards trust and sustainability efforts. This emphasises ICAEW’s commitment to building sustainable business futures and providing members and students with the resources and training needed to achieve COP26 and the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals.

ICAEW Indonesia

6. Preparing students to build a brighter future

In November 2021, ICAEW held a national student conference titled “Prepare Yourself for a Brighter Future with ICAEW”. During the conference, students had the valuable opportunity to learn from practitioners and experts across different career and life areas on key topics such as the most needed skill sets during job search and interview, building good financial habits at a young age, strengthening personal branding, and the importance of having a professional qualification.

The conference was attended by both high school and university students from a diverse range of education backgrounds covering both Accounting and non-Accounting majors across Indonesia and other countries. This conference better-enabled students to be well equipped with the skills and knowledge to ace their job interviews and get a headstart in their professional careers.
